ABOUT ME

Supply Chain and Marketing Double Major

Minor in Business Analytics

Hometown: Annapolis, MD

Birthday: May 14th 1995

My name is Luke Makris. I am from Annapolis MD, but live on campus. I am a supply chain and marketing double major with a minor in business analyics.

My mom studied abroad in france as a french minor, met my dad and he came back to the U.S. I grew up learning french and speak fluently. This was the start of my passion for culture and international business. I took Spanish 6 years in school and continually seek to learn new things about different cultures.

I am in the Global Consulting fellows and supply chain fellows. I aspire to one day help companies expand internationally in a way that respects the local culture so that the company can be successful. Before I leave UMD I plan on getting my M.S. in Supply Chain. I love learning, will always be a learner, but hate test taking so I am getting my credentials before I leave.

I am always seeking out new learning opportunities and improving upon my leadership, communication and intercultural skills. I want to travel as much as possible, get to know and serve as many people as possible, and be innovative and entrepreneurial.

I have a start up called Maryland Pawn Essentials in which I connect unwanted products with those who want them at affordable prices, with a primary focus on bicycles and electronics. It simulates the coming together of google and a flea market. As an example, if you need a cell phone but don’t want to pay a fortune for a new iPhone, you call me, tell me what you are looking for, and when I find a great deal I let you know. I get to help solve your problem and you leave with extra cash in your pocket.

I am passionate about serving others, learning, improving and growing, so please all feedback about anything good or bad is welcome. I appreciate straight forward guidance and communication. I am a well organized and structured individual. I am an early riser, I prioritize with a To Do List, I often finish things far before the due date and love being in community.

Reach out to me any time. I would be more than happy to just chat, help you, try something new, or whatever comes to mind. I believe that the best way to learn is to teach, ask lots of questions and make yourself uncomfortable. That means taking calculated risks. I look forward to hearing from you.

A multipotentialite is someone who has the following 3 traits:

  1. Idea synthesis

  2. Rapid learning

  3. adaptability

Here is how I fit those traits.

I become very interested in something and dive all into it. I become so entrenched that at some point it becomes no longer challenging and I get bored. I thought that this inability to chose one focus of interest was a flaw of mine, but I now realize that this diversity of interests and determination to become an expert in a subject of interest are my strengths. I realized I am a multipotentialite, someone with multiple interests and creative pursuits.AKA polymath, renaissance person. And there are 3 multipotentialite superpowers that I possess.

#1. Idea synthesis: combining two or more fields and drawing conclusions from their intersect. This is at the core of innovation and why I am such an entrepreneur and innovator. My multiple backgrounds and experiences fuel my idea synthesis.

#2 Rapid Learning. When I get interested in something, I go hard, and I am used to being a beginner. Thus I am ready and comfortable starting something new and testing the waters. It also turns out many traits and skills are transferable from one field to another, so I never start out from scratch. And what I do lack I can learn quickly. I have also found that it is rarely a waste of time to pursue somthing I am drawn to even if I quit in the end because I may apply that new knowledge in a different field in a way I would have never imagined.

#3 Adaptability. This is the ability to morph into whatever I need to be. Sometimes I am a leader, sometimes a craftsman, sometimes a listener, and sometimes a small business owner. It is the organization that can pivot to meet the needs of the market that will succeed. This adaptability is what allows me (as the organization) to adapt to the markets needs (employers/jobs) and be a successful organization (individual). So I embrace my passions, follow my curiosities wherever they may take me and explore my intersections of interests and experiences.
